Growing Education, Nutrition, and Hope at Suguta Consolata Primary School
In the heart of Samburu County, a quiet transformation is taking place at Suguta Consolata Primary School.
For many children in this remote part of Kenya, school is more than a place of learning—it is a safe space where they can dream, grow, and build a better future. Yet challenges such as limited educational resources, food insecurity, child rights violations, and gender-based violence continue to affect the wellbeing and development of many learners.
Recognizing these challenges, The Tree of Life Kenya, in partnership with Missione Calcutta, the Diocese, and Caritas Maralal, embarked on a collaborative initiative to rehabilitate and strengthen Suguta Consolata Primary School. The project, generously funded by the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) and Missione Calcutta, seeks to create a more supportive and holistic learning environment for children while strengthening the broader community around them.
Today, the impact of this partnership is becoming increasingly visible.
Beyond improvements in education services, the project has become a catalyst for promoting children’s rights, raising awareness on the prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and improving the health and wellbeing of pupils through enhanced nutrition initiatives.
One of the most exciting developments has been the expansion of the school’s agricultural activities. What was once a modest school farm is evolving into a sustainable source of nutrition and learning for students.
Through the project, a poultry farming unit has been introduced, providing opportunities for both nutrition and practical agricultural learning. Dairy cows have also been added to the school farm, contributing to improved dietary diversity for learners while offering valuable lessons in livestock management.
At the same time, the school community has been actively preparing and cultivating the farm, planting a variety of vegetables that will help supplement school meals with fresh, nutritious produce.
These interventions are not only improving access to healthy food but are also teaching children important life skills in agriculture, sustainability, and food production.
For many pupils, the benefits extend far beyond the classroom. Better nutrition contributes to improved concentration, attendance, academic performance, and overall wellbeing. Combined with efforts to promote child protection and create safer environments for learning, the project is helping children thrive academically, physically, and socially.
The success of the Suguta Consolata Primary School initiative demonstrates the power of partnerships in creating lasting change. By bringing together local communities, faith-based organizations, development partners, and educators, the project is addressing multiple challenges facing children and building a stronger foundation for their future.
