WHEN: January – December 2022 (phase 1)​
WHERE: Nairobi and Kiambu counties, Kenya​
OBJECTIVES: to promote and implement foster care as a key tool for protecting the rights of minors outside the family and as a value for solidarity, dialogue and attention between people.​
MAIN RESULTS:​
R1: Improvement and enhancement of the services provided by 4 Reception Centers for minors in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.​

A2: The Foster Family service is implemented according to adequate standards as a form of alternative care and assistance for the most vulnerable children.​

R3: Strengthen the exchange of knowledge and best practices on foster care and parental care between public and private stakeholders in the Kenyan and international context.

MAIN ACTIVITIES «FAMILY FOSTER» – RESULT 1
1.1: Development of an assessment and alignment plan for the project reception centres.​

1.2: Refurbishment and supply of goods for the Rescue Dada centre.​

1.3: Delivery of a Capacity Building program for managers, operators, care givers, on the reform of the child protection system in Kenya, Alternative Family Care and Foster Care.​

1.4: Identification and assessment of minors to be placed in foster care.​

MAIN ACTIVITIES «FAMILY FOSTER» – RESULT 2
2.1: Technical support to decentralized government structures in charge of the foster family system in Kenya (SCCO/ AAC/ CRC)​

2.2: Events and awareness campaigns on Alternative Family Care and foster care.​

2.3: Recruitment and training of foster families.​

2.4: Child/Family Matching and Placement and Case Management.​

2.5: Creation of a foster family association in Kenya.​

MAIN ACTIVITIES «FAMILY FOSTER» – RESULT 3
3.1 Technical support and coordination with national and international stakeholders.​

3.2: Promotion of foster care in the private sector in Kenya.​

3.3: Tree of Life Exchange Program (Kenya-Italy-India-other countries).

BENEFICIARIES: ​
206 children welcomed in the 4 residential communities involved in the project.​
Over 138 operators – managers, professionals, social workers.​
Approximately 40 Sub-County Children officers and members of the Alternative Care Committees (ACC), institutional key players in charge of child protection and foster care on behalf of the Government, ​
At least 2,500 community members and 30,000 people (Kenyan public) involved in information and awareness raising activities and campaigns (community level and national level).​
At least 100 foster parents.​
60 children placed in intra- and hetero-family foster care solutions.​
50 families of origin of children placed in foster care.

PARTNERS: Caritas Nairobi and 4 residential centers for minors coordinated by Caritas, in particular: ​
Rescue Dada, Recovery and reception center for street children. Capacity 70 girls. Active since 1992. Female only. Also equipped with informal school and TVET for hairdressing.​

KWETU Home of Peace for Boys​
Created in 1993, Kwetu home of peace is a recovery and rehabilitation center for street children (male). KWETU supports approximately 80 beneficiaries simultaneously.​

It consists of: ​

“Drop in” Center in Madaraka Nairobi and ​Main center in Ruai area.​
Joy Children’s Village Operating since August 2011, the “Nazareth Joy Children’s Village” is located in the Limuru area. It hosts children infected or sick with HIV and AIDS. Joy Village receives children under the age of 10, mostly orphans, abandoned or vulnerable. They are welcomed in 5 different family units, managed by the “mamas” figures. Each nucleus hosts from 8 to 12 children.
